Dental Advice – Malpractice?
I got some dental work done two years ago when I had insurance and money. 10-12 fillings. I have been informed by my new dentist, after having xrays done for the first time since the fillings, that most of them were done incorrectly, leaving gaps which leave my teeth susceptable to more damage than not. I have xrays from the last visit, and I am trying to get some advice about what constitutes normal wear and tear of fillings and what would be considered malpractice or neglegence. I can’t afford to have these redone and my insurance won’t cover even 1/5 of the amount. Seeking a second opinion. If you msg me with your email I can send you the photos. Please let me know what your qualifications are or what your experience is with this. Any info is appreciated.

Get the records sent to another dentist for a second opinion. Explain the circumstances and see what his advice would be. Perhaps if they were incorrectly placed the original dentist will re do them for no charge. Good luck.
it’s difficult to say whether the filllings were done incorrectly without knowing the full circumstances, your mouth condition, your dietary habits, what kind of materials were used, etc.
Have you gone to another dentist, a 3rd one, to seek another opinion?
The x-rays from new dentist would be very helpful. One dentist at my old office doesn’t know how to use the digital x-ray units, he clicks on this enhanced contrasted button and there will be a decay on every tooth, when in fact it’s just a different view on the software.
Sometimes a dentist will place a liner underneath the fillings, an extra layer of protection. If this liner material is not radioopaque, meaning that they don’t show up on xray film, then it can also look like a cavity.
How is your dietary habit? If you had 10-12 cavities in the beginning you didn’t have a good history of maintaining your teeth. If you drink a lot of soda or you do a lot of grinding and chewing they can also wear down the fillings fast.
But like I said it’s hard to say whether the first dentist was negligent. If I were you I would go to a 3rd dentist for another opinion, or even the original dentist and see what he thinks.
good luck
It’s hard to say without seeing the x rays, but it is possible the side decays is not the first dentists fault. When you put in a filling, there is always going to be a microscopic “gap” between the filling material and the tooth. Maybe bacteria entered through there and caused further decay.
Another likely reason is that a lot of dentists leave some decays behind on purpose. There are two layers of decay; one layer you have to remove, because it is impossible to fix. The other layer has the potential to become healthy again, and current practice is to leave this layer. Sometimes though, this layer does not heal, and it can be due to a number of factors, most of which have to do with the patients habits.
Having said that, it is possible that your first dentist was indeed a bad dentist. I agree with what the others have said, and that first go back to your first dentist, then if you are still unhappy, a third dentist.
Hope that helps
