This is the second post I’ve seen from someone who got a “letter” informing them about something from their doctor, only in your case, you aren’t even the one who got the letter. I don’t know if it’s malpractice or not since you didn’t mention what the disease is, but if it’s something that you could have been getting treatment for, I’d definitely pay a visit to a lawyer. I’d also call the doctor and demand an explanation for why I wasn’t told personally. It’s bad enough when a doctor has his nurse call you with news, and sending a letter is even worse, but not telling you at all — that’s deplorable.
There’s also the issue of confidentiality. Did you give the doctor permission to release your health information to your dentist? Did you give it in writing? In the US, this is mandatory. If he violated your rights by disclosing something to another party without your consent, he is in trouble and that is actionable in court.
Yes, I think I would seek the advice of a malpractice attorney. Find one who will take your case on a percentage basis, he only gets paid a portion (usually 1/3 to 1/2) of what he’s able to obtain for you.
Good luck, both with your disease and getting justice…
